People using New Leaf in Exminster are benefiting from a new multi-span polytunnel funded by Open Up, creating more opportunities to build confidence, develop skills and take positive steps towards volunteering, training and employment.
The £64k project has transformed the site’s growing space, providing a larger, more accessible and practical environment where people can take part in meaningful horticultural activities as part of their recovery journey. The new polytunnel officially opened in April 2026 and has already been used by around 40 people accessing the service.
Creating more opportunities
New Leaf supports people experiencing mental health difficulties, including those who are neurodivergent, by providing vocational rehabilitation and opportunities to develop employment skills in a supportive environment. The new polytunnel has strengthened that offer by creating a space where more people can take part in practical activities while building confidence and experience.
The larger growing area has increased capacity, improved accessibility and enabled a greater variety of plants to be grown throughout the year. It has also made day-to-day tasks more efficient, helping people take on greater responsibility and develop their independence.

Supporting recovery through meaningful activity
Having the right environment can make a real difference to how people feel, learn and engage. The new polytunnel provides a welcoming space where people can develop practical skills, connect with others and work towards personal goals.
Early outcome data collected by the service shows positive progress among people using the nursery programme, demonstrating the value of meaningful activity in supporting wellbeing, confidence and recovery.
Beyond the immediate benefits for people using the service, the project also includes long-term environmental improvements. Biodiversity measures surrounding the development will help enhance the site for years to come, creating a lasting legacy for both people and nature.
